In the footsteps of Laurel & Hardy
A Silent Movie night with acclaimed concert pianist John Lenehan
In 1954, Stan & Ollie embarked on what was to be their last ever live UK tour bringing their silver screen comedy to theatres around the UK. Sadly the tour finished earlier than planned due to Ollie’s ill health, and Stan, his loyal partner, refused to continue without him.
This programme celebrates two classic silent movies of Laurel & Hardy in a theatre setting with live piano accompaniment by renowned British pianist John Lenehan.
Reviving the celebrated tradition of the improvising cinema pianist, John Lenehan sets the scene for each film with Ragtime, Fats Waller and a host of musical styles resulting in a virtuosic tour-de-force - a perfectly fitting tribute to Stan & Ollie, the masters of silent comedy.
In this programme of comedy classics we just have to include Charlie Chaplin & Buster Keaton.
John Lenehan has appeared in concerts throughout the world to great acclaim. He has appeared with orchestras such as the London Symphony at the Barbican and the Royal Philharmonic in the Royal Albert Hall. One of the most respected and versatile classical pianists, John Lenehan performs as soloist with many leading orchestras. He has featured on the soundtrack of 'Harry Potter', appeared many times on television, including the 'Royal Variety Performance' and toured the world with artists such as Julian Lloyd Webber and Nigel Kennedy.
Laurel & Hardy
Putting Pants on Philip (1927) 20 mins
Made in 1927, it is their first "official" film together as a team. The plot involves Laurel as Philip; a young Scot newly arrived in the United States, in full kilted splendour, the resulting mishaps involving the kilt and his Uncle’s attempts to get him to the tailor for ‘proper’ trousers!
One AM - Charlie Chaplin (1916) 13 mins. Music by Scott Joplin
A display of virtuoso comic acting by Charlie Chaplin who also directed the film. Arriving home in evening dress in the early hours, he manages to maintain the utmost dignity despite enormous odds.
Laurel & Hardy
Big Business (1929) 19 mins
Stan and Ollie are determined to sell Christmas Trees (even to the most unwilling customers!), it’s impossible not to laugh at their antics - selling Christmas trees in the middle of summer!
One Week – Buster Keaton (1920) 19 mins
Buster Keaton and Sybil Seely are newlyweds. Among their wedding gifts is a portable house you can easily (apparently) put together in one week...
