Stapleford Granary

Event description

2018

Kathryn Tickell is the foremost exponent of the Northumbrian pipes, a composer, performer, educator and successful recording artist whose work is deeply rooted in the landscape and people of Northumbria.

Kathryn was awarded the OBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List, 2015. The OBE recognises her extraordinary career which began with learning tunes from old shepherd friends and evolved to traverse genres from jazz and world music to large-scale orchestral works. Exploring and cultivating her bountiful native heritage of Northumberland have been a constant throughout.

SUPERFOLKUS are an irrepressible force, they don’t just breathe new life into the traditional and contemporary tunes of Northumberland and beyond…they blast them into new and uncharted territory! These six musicians will blow you away with their fresh new sound. We defy you to keep track of all the various combinations of guitars, mandolins,  fiddles, keyboards, percussion, accordion, voice and Northumbrian pipes from this amazing group of multi-instrumentalists. But watch out - after you’ve been invigorated by the drive, swing and sheer technical virtuosity of the music you may find yourself moved to tears by an evocative slow air, and by the obvious commitment and passion of these young players.

The public face of SUPERFOLKUS is that it is a band: a really good band! Behind the scenes, however, SUPERFOLKUS is a training and mentoring scheme for young musicians aged between 15 and 25 years old, founded and led by Kathryn Tickell, who also performs with them. Superfolkus offers a unique opportunity to develop performing skills, arrangement and composition skills, increasing each participant’s confidence and future career opportunities.
