Alan Sorrell (1904-1974): The Man who Created Roman Britain

By Julia Sorrell

27 September 19.30   £8

Alan Sorrell is best remembered for his visualisation of our British heritage in his characteristic reconstruction drawings of such places as Stonehenge and Hadrian’s Wall with their stormy clouds, windswept trees and galloping horses. In this illustrated talk, Alan Sorrell’s daughter Julia shows how an artist from an unprivileged and non-academic background would, by sheer chance, work with and be respected by the leading archaeologists of his day with a profound influence for generations to come. Julia Sorrell, herself an artist, has recently written a biography on her father with her brother Mark (A small exhibition of prints from his book illustrations will be on show).
